HVAC System Hail Damage – Repair or Replace?

A fin comb has thin plastic or metal teeth that fit between the aluminum fins of the condenser coil. Because the fins are thin and malleable, a technician can straighten them by pulling a comb along the coil. This is typically a far more cost-effective method to restore the efficiency of the condenser.  If the deformation of the fins is too extensive, or if large hailstones have caused damage to the copper tubing itself, then it may be necessary to replace the coil.  The cost advantage of combing out the hail damage can be substantial in some cases. Combing involves a few hours of labor, and does not require the purchase f any materials; replacing a coil or an entire condenser unit requires installation labor, thousands of dollars worth of materials, and even crane rental fees for rooftop units.

Condenser coils should also be checked regularly for cleanliness. Dust and debris will act like ice buildup on an evaporator coil. This will insulate the heat transfer surface and reduce airflow, which will make the compressor run harder and longer. The Importance of Cleaning the HVAC Condenser

BeforesplitIMG_20130719_132215_852If a condenser becomes dirty or fouled, less heat transfer can take place from the refrigerant to the surrounding ambient space. Dirty condensers are probably the most common problem found during a service call next to dirty filters. It is hard to say which one is the most devastating to a system. List below are some the results of a dirty condenser.

  1. Compressor amperage begins to exceed its design limits shortening the life of the compressor.

  2. Discharge gas temperature can reach critical levels causing a breakdown of the refrigerant and oil lead to compressor or system failure. This level is about 225degs.

  3. The suction gas coming back to the compressor is no longer sufficient to cool the compressor motor, again leading to compressor failure.

  4. The condensers air discharge temperature is greatly elevated and if the condenser fan motor relies on it for cooling, it may fail as well.

When hail strikes an unprotected surface of a condenser coil, the aluminum fins are easily bent. The severity, depth of the deformity, and the total surface area affected are the primary factors that determine whether to repair or replace the damaged coil. The extent of damage caused by hail to the condenser coil will determine if the fins require straightening or replacing as a result of direct hail damage which impedes proper air flow through the coil.

You should consider providing hail protection for this equipment based on the priority of importance to your operations. Items such as HVAC, cooling towers, process exhaust, environmental control, refrigeration and other such equipment may need protection.
